Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the CVP Lab Coordinator, the Echo Technician is an individual qualified by academic and clinical experience to provide non-invasive diagnostic cardiac services using ultrasound, stress, and other diagnostic procedures on patients of all age groups. The Echo Technician, under the guidance of a registered Echo Technologist, will perform transthoracic echocardiography examinations on patients of all age groups. Under the direct supervision of an appropriately credentialed staff member, will assist with transesophageal echocardiograms, stress echocardiograms, and other cardiac stress tests, with and without nuclear imaging. The Echo Technician will also assist with other non-invasive diagnostic cardiac procedures, including 12-lead ECG's, signal-averaged ECG's, cardiac holter monitors, cardiac event monitors, and ambulatory blood pressure monitors. In accordance with hospital policy and the SDMS Scope of Practice for the Diagnositic Ultrasound Professional, the Echo Technician will "perform patient (evaluations); acquire and analyze data obtained using ultrasound and related diagnostic technologies; provide a summary of findings to the cardiologist to aid in patient diagnosis and management; use independent judgement and systematic problem solving methods to produce high quality diagnostic information and optimize patient care." Performs other related patient care and non-patient care duties.

Qualifications

EducationMinimum 1 year academic training in cardiovascular technology or ultrasound technology.Licensure/CertificationBLS required.ACLS desirable.Must obtain echo registry to be eligible to transition into echo technologist position within one year of hire.ExperienceEquivalent of 2 quarters clinical experience in echo technology.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesDemonstrated competence through clinical training in basic echocardiography.Demonstrates strong customer service and interpersonal skills.Demonstrates ability to think critically and prioritize multiple responsibilities to meet the needs of the patients and department.Demonstrates ability to function effectively under stress and respond appropriately in compromising or emergency situations.Demonstrates ability to analyze patient information and evaluation in order to develop an appropriate procedure plan for the diagnostic procedure.Demonstrates strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology.Demonstrates competency in performance of echocardiography procedures.Demonstrates and adequate knowledge of cardiac rhythms to perform related cardiac diagnostic procedures.Physical DemandsStanding for long periods of time (8 to 12 hours)Walking for long periods of time (8 to 12 hours) to include moving about the work area, hospital and/or campus as neededSitting for extended periods (8 to 12 hours)Must be able to bend, stoop and reach/lift above your headSight: must be able to read documentation in a variety of formats such as items in print or electronically. For Health Care Providers (HCP) must be able to visualize patient condition and see data displayed on monitoring devices, etc.Auditory: must be able to hear in order to clearly communicate with others and use communication devices such as telephones, must be able to hear patients, alarms, call bells, etc.Tactile: must have ability to handle equipment and/or devices related to job duties, enter documentation within computer system. For HCP must be able to feel for pulses, skin temperature, and other patient conditionsOlfactory: HCP need to be able to smell disease-specific smellsHCP should not manually lift (including transfer, reposition, or move) patients who weigh greater than 35 pounds. The appropriate safe patient handling device will be used, except in emergency situations (life or death situations where delay in obtaining and using the safe patient handling equipment may be detrimental to the patient).
